St. Clement Catholic Church Mexican Mayan Outreach

In Kancab the community has begun building their new church. Thanks to the Government, who is paying for 75% of the construction, materials are being purchased and the pillars of the new church have been erected. The new church will seat about 400-500 people. The total cost of the church is 1,600,000 pesos. ($160,000 dollars). The village has raised $22,000 dollars of the $40,000 they need. We have raised or received from private donations $2,408.89 to present to the mission. Fr. Santos and the community appreciates having brother and sisters. The construction will be done by January (hopefully) and the church blessed in the summer. We would like to celebrate this moment with the community. Fr. Santos has invited any who would like to participate in the celebration to come. More information will be provided as the year progresses.

A DIFFERENT WORLD

Kancab is a Mayan village. In many ways it is like stepping back into the pages of history. There are still many things done the old ways and yet the new world of industry and technology is creeping in. The village wakes early in the morning and all is a buzz of work like: cleaning the house and the yard, preparing meals for the day, taking a ride to Tekax for work or additional supplies and working locally at a store or the church construction. Life is a bit slower paced. There are less diseases and despite the lack of medical care, the Mayan people tend to live healthy lives. It’s amazing and a blessing to share in the life of a wonderful people. As the world strives to modernize and teach about technology and industry, may the hope and treasure the people have never be lost.

Christ the King Church (Kancab, Mexico)

The construction of the church is well under way. The new church will hold approximately between 400-500 people. It will have 8 columns on either side and two rows in the middle. The majority of the construction is being done by parishioners. Many in this area work as day laborers. A full days wage in the Yucatan is equivalent to $7.00 US dollars. There is no major construction company like Hawkins that does the development. It is the very people who will benefit from this worship space that are working diligently and with great love. It is a privilege for these men to assist in the building of the very church their children will be baptized in, the grandchildren married in, etc. It’s amazing the work that is done, with only the simplest of tools. Nothing is wasted, everything is measured and used. There is much to be appreciated and learned from our Brothers and sisters on the other side of the Gulf.
