LLectio Divina Method
Pre:
- discovering underlying spiritual rhythm in daily life
- with rhythm we discover a way to offer ourselves and our relationships to the Father
- we come to accept the embrace that God is continuously extending to us through Jesus
Lectio: (Reading/listening):
- cultivating the ability to listen deeply
- to hear “with the ears of our heart”
- imitate the prophet Elijah: listen for the still small voice of God (1 Kings 19:12) the “faint murmuring sound” (which is
God ‘s word for us-God’s voice touching our hearts)
- “Hear, O Israel!” we must hear-listen to the voice of God
- God often speaks very softly
- In order to listen to someone speaking softly we must listen carefully-to be silent
- Learn to love silence (cast our gaze to God)
- First Step: quieting down
- Second Step: reading
- Reverential listening-(listening both in a spirit of silence and awe)
- Listening for the still, small voice of God that will speak to us personally-not loudly but intimately
- In lectio we read slowly, attentively, gently listening to hear a word or phrase that is God’s word for us today
Meditatio: (Meditation)
- Once we have found a word or a passage that speaks to us in a personal way we take it and “ruminate” on it
- Chewing cud
- Ponder the word of God like Mary “Pondering in her heart” (Like 2:19)
- Memorize the word, gently repeating it to ourselves, allow it to interact with our thoughts, our hope, our memories, our desires
- We allow God’s word to become His word for us, a word that touches us and affects us at the deepest levels
Oratio: (Prayer)
- engage in a dialogue with God (a loving conversation with the one who has invited us into His embrace)
- engage in a conversation that is a call to change as part of a consecration-prayer which allows the word taken in to touch and change our deepest selves
- the word becomes the bread and wine of that which is being invited by God to be healed through the healing word or phrase God has given us in our lectio and meditatio
- through oration, this consecration-prayer, we allow our real selves to be touched and changed by the word of God
Contemplatio: (Contemplation)
- rest in the presence of God (who has used His word as a means of inviting us to accept His transforming embrace)
- times that words are not necessary
- Wordless, quiet rest in the presence of the one who loves us
- Practice silence letting go of words
- Enjoying the experience of being in the presence of God
- To cease from doing and learn to simply be
