Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word."5

Seeking the Sacrament of Baptism for your child shows that you recognize the importance of God in your life.  The Baptism of your child provides an opportunity to examine your own Christian life and spirituality. You are saying that you want to share your living Catholic Christian Faith with your child.

To have a child baptized at St. Clement, parents are expected to:

  • Be registered, active members in good standing at parish of registration and attend Sunday Mass regularly.
  • Attend an Orientation class.
  • Attend Baptismal preparation class with God-parents.

 Documentation Needed:

  • Letter of permission from parish, if other than St. Clement, must be presented by Baptism Class.
  • Copy of child’s birth certificate at time of registration (Orientation Class).
  • Certificate of Eligibility for God-parent(s) by Baptism Class.

Requirements for a Sponsor or Godparent:

  • Must be a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Must be 16 years of age
  • Should be living an exemplary Christian life: attending Mass weekly, receiving Communion and receving the

Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year.

  • Catholic's who are married outside the Catholic Church or who are living with someone outside of marriage, may not be godparent's/sponsors at this time.
  • A baptized Christian, not belonging to the Catholic Church, may act as a Christian witness as long as there is also a Catholic godparent.

Please call the parish office at (813) 752-8251 to sign-up for the Orientation and Baptism Preparation Class.
